Hi great site. Are the Cranes regularly present at Nene Washes and can you tell me the best time of day to see them if they are please. Many thanks, Martyn
I'm curious as to how one counts the birds with such great precision: 24 Crane, Avocet, yes, I can see how that could be done, obviously, but precisely 951 Black-tailed Godwit? It wasn't just 950 or 952? If I saw a flock with those kinds of numbers, I'd probably be guesstimating the order of magnitude at 500-1000 +/- a couple of hundred.
And counting to four sig figs for 9587 Wigeon, 2135 Teal, 9122 Lapwing, 4340 Golden Plover...is it an in-joke or is there really some scientifically reproduceable method that I'm missing. Even when I've used a dot count app on photos of flocks it has a margin of error, especially as one dot in a photo might be two or more birds...
